After a week filled with complaints about the new Maps app found in iOS 6, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, the?company's CEO, Tim Cook, has issued an apology to customers along with a list of alternative apps.
A link to the apology appears on the?Apple website, plainly labeled as "[a] letter to our customers regarding Maps."
Cook begins the note by explaining that while Apple strives to "make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible," it "fell short on this commitment" with the launch of its new Maps app.
"We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better," Cook writes?before explaining that the reason a new version of Maps needed to be created was so that Apple could offer its customer features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, and so on. "The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you," he adds.
While Apple's improving its own Maps app, you can use something else, Cook suggests. "You can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app."
One can only imagine how much it pains Cook to suggest that the over 100 million folks who are using iOS 6 at this time should just try a product made by Apple's competitors for a while.

EPA Training Program Prepares Graduates For Cleanup Jobs
The Greater Binghamton Business Journal:
SYRACUSE ? A two-week training program from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) prepared 14 graduates for work on Superfund sites including Onondaga Lake.
Most the graduates will be hired to work on the lake cleanup, according to the EPA. The course prepared students for careers in environmental cleanup and helped them earn certifications in the field.

Drugs prescribed to treat anxiety, depression and insomnia may increase patients' risk of being involved in motor vehicle accidents, according to a recent study, published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. Based on the findings, the researchers suggested doctors should consider advising patients not to drive while taking these drugs.
Psychotropic drugs affect the way the brain functions and can impair a driver's ability to control their vehicle. Research on the links between psychotropic medication and driving accidents has focused on benzodiazepines, which have been used to treat anxiety and insomnia. Perhaps the best known of these drugs is diazepam. Newer Z-drugs, used to treat insomnia, have received less attention, as have antidepressants and antipsychotics.
To understand the effects of a wider spectrum of psychotropic drugs on driving accidents, the authors compared drug use in two groups of people identified using medical records from the Taiwanese national health insurance programme. The first group included 5,183 people involved in motor vehicle accidents. The second group included 31,093 people, matched for age, gender and the year of vehicle accidents, who had no record of being involved in motor vehicle accidents. In general, those involved in accidents were more likely to have been taking psychotropic drugs, whether they had been taking them for one month, one week or one day.
The results suggest that the increased risk associated with benzodiazepines is mirrored in both Z-drugs and antidepressants. However, antipsychotics were not associated with an increased risk of motor vehicle accidents, even among those taking higher doses.
"Our findings underscore that people taking these psychotropic drugs should pay increased attention to their driving performance in order to prevent motor vehicle accidents," said lead researcher, Hui-Ju Tsai, who is based at the National Health Research Institutes in Zhunan, Taiwan. "Doctors and pharmacists should choose safer treatments, provide their patients with accurate information and consider advising them not to drive while taking certain psychotropic medications."
The research strengthens the findings of previous reports that have assessed the risk associated with individual psychotropic drugs. It also provides more evidence on the link between dose and driving performance, showing that higher doses are associated with a higher risk of an accident. "Our data demonstrated significant dose effects for antidepressants, benzodiazepine and Z-drugs," said Tsai. "This suggests that taking a higher dosage poses a greater danger to those intending to drive."
The authors recommend that patients do not stop taking their medication, but if concerned should consult their doctor.

Hard coating extends the life of new ultrahigh-density storage device
ScienceDaily (Sep. 12, 2012) ? Probe storage devices read and write data by making nanoscale marks on a surface through physical contact. The technology may one day extend the data density limits of conventional magnetic and optical storage, but current probes have limited lifespans due to mechanical wear.
A research team, led by Intel Corp., has now developed a long-lasting ultrahigh-density probe storage device by coating the tips of the probes with a thin metal film.
The team's device features an array of 5,000 ultrasharp probes that is integrated with on-chip electronic circuits. The probes write tiny bits of memory as small as a few nanometers by sending short electrical pulses to a ferroelectric film, a material that can be given a permanent electric polarization by applying an electric field. High-speed data access requires that the probes slide quickly and frequently across the film. To prevent tip wear, which can seriously degrade the write-read resolution of the device, the researchers deposited a thin metal film of hafnium diboride (HfB2) on the probe tips.
As the researchers describe in the American Institute of Physics' journal Applied Physics Letters, the metal film reduces wear and enables the probe tips to retain their write-read resolution at high speeds for distances exceeding 8 kilometers -- greatly increasing the device's lifetime. The data densities of the device exceed 1 Terabit per square inch. The work is an important step toward the commercialization of a probe-based storage technology with capacities that exceed those of hard disk and solid-state drives.

Danny Lipford: OK, all right. Well, I can see where this would make a difference. But still it takes forever to stand here and do this when I?m sure there?s other things you want me to do.
Trisha Craven Worley: Well, I have a very simple solution for you.
Danny Lipford: OK.
Trisha Craven Worley: Nice little spade here.
Danny Lipford: All right. How?s that going to help me?
Trisha Craven Worley: Well, I have a really low-tech method for us to free up your hands for some other work.
Danny Lipford: Oh, great.
Trisha Craven Worley: I have some rubber bands, I don?t know I guess there about four rubber bands here. We?re just going to put this around here, if you?ll give me this.
And I?m going to put this in here, and you see the rubber band helps lock it in position. And we get this out here, and we?re going to turn this nozzle back and voil?, an extra pair of hands.
Danny Lipford: Well, that works pretty good, and I guess you always have a spade around when you?re doing work out in the yard. And this is a heck of a lot easier than digging up your whole garden putting in an irrigation system in.
Trisha Craven Worley: Uh-huh. Well you know the other nice part about this, Danny, is because it is so easy to move, I can do just that. And the fact I?m using this kind of nozzle I can turn it off, and then move it without getting wet to the next location.
Danny Lipford: Well, that?s a great idea. A real good one.
Trisha Craven Worley: And that frees you up for a little bit more work. Are you ready?
Danny Lipford: Of course. Oh, year. Oh, the rake.
Trisha Craven Worley: Here you go!

Learning How to Sew: Making Decisions and Setting Priorities ...
We?ve all seen the perfect life projected in home magazines. Apartment Therapy supplies it for urbanites; Real Simple makes it easy. And Southern Living does it best.
Some of us have to dig deeper to conquer our emotional clutter. I can tell you how to let go, because I have such a hard time doing it. As I write this, I?m convincing myself to keep what I had originally intended to give away. I am in the planning stages of pouring all my hopes and dreams into a broken Singer sewing machine.

Are you really ever going to learn how to sew?
That should be the deciding question for most sane people, but today it just isn?t doing it. So, here I sit with two (yes, two) broken Singer sewing machines. My push pedal is a true antique, sitting right around 100 years old. A family heirloom passed from my great-grandmother to my mother and then to myself, its drawers are home for arts and craft supplies and other odds-and-ends. It?s the perfect marriage of form, function, and sentiment. Ironically, it?s the presence of this machine that makes me feel so guilty for keeping the other.
The suspect in question is a 1973 aqua blue beauty, passed down from my distinctly Southern grandmother. With no drawers and a wobbly set of legs, the table is not as useful as its older counterpart, but the machine is durable and gives off that vintage feel all the cool kids are craving these days. In other words, I want to want to keep it. I want to be one of the commenters from this blog post, who would be thrilled to own this little time capsule.
Don?t Sweat the Small Stuff
To really understand what?s going on here, you need to take a modular approach to solving your problem. Ruminate with me a moment. What is stuff? What is the purpose of it? Do you feel attachment toward your things? What does that mean to you? I know exactly what drives my thoughts toward this machine. Part of it is an emotional battlefield of sentiment, discipline, and misplaced energy. The other reasons are easier to isolate. I want it, because it?s blue and cute and vintage. I want it, because it?s durable (and not plastic!). This machine is older than I am, and it?s probably a lot cooler too.
What will happen if you get rid of the object in question? The allure of stuff runs deep, and the only way to shake it is to take a hard look at what you?re holding onto. My sentiment ? it was a hand-me-down from my grandmother, Lillie Mae. If you find yourself feeling burdened with the weight of your things, removing physical emotional baggage is a great place to start the recovery process. Consider putting an item limit to the amount of reminders you keep per person. I do happen to have another reminder of Lillie Mae. After her funeral, I was given a peace lily which has since turned into two plants. Lilies make great houseplants, because of their filtering abilities. It?s a living reminder, and it serves a purpose.
Decisions and Life in General
Now bear in mind, the reminder is only one facet of the three-dimensional physical-emotional ego-cloud hanging over this sewing machine. Blame it on a lack of discipline or an abundance of priorities, but my sewing experience is limited to pillows and buttons. I want to learn how to sew. I want to make costumes and curtains and quilts. And if I start sewing, I want it to be on this machine. It?s not so much the sewing that scares me away. It?s the process involved in making all of this happen. I have to fix the sewing machine, and learn how to use the sewing machine, and then learn how to sew. It?s a process that is so easily interchanged with other passions in my life. I could spend this time dancing. Where are my priorities? And therein lies the lesson of life. We?ll never have enough time or enough money, and life doesn?t wait for you to say when it?s finished. To get something accomplished, we must make it a priority.
Top Tips for Snap Decisions
1) Approach important issues first thing in the morning when your resolve is the strongest.
2) Good old pros and cons list ? don?t forget to note your opportunity cost.
3) Flip a coin. Note your reaction to your intended fate. Do you wish the coin had landed on tails?

4) The Universal Rule: How does this decision fit into your values and goals?
Spiritual enlightenment may not spare you the peril of everyday decision-making. Emotional burnout is much easier to arrive at than you may realize. As you make decisions throughout your day, your ability to make decisions later in the day are compromised. Once fatigue is reached, people are more likely to A) Make rash decisions and B) Make the decision of deciding not to decide. I?m sure you can trace this back to several areas of your life. Have you ever been ashamed at your poor choices from an impromptu shopping spree? Do you procrastinate on small tasks and errands? If this is the case, try going at it with a fresh perspective. Don?t make hard decisions (or test your willpower) late at night, and when in doubt, stick to #4.
Making my way from suburbanite to city dweller has proven to be a challenge to my heirlooms (and my philosophy), particularly the ones large enough to be considered furniture. There is something to say about what you dedicate your floor space to. So what did I do with the sewing machine? I?ll never tell. It?s time to focus on your priorities now.

Clinton seeks to boost democracy in Asia's newest country
DILI (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made a short visit to East Timor on Thursday, throwing her considerable diplomatic weight behind a fledgling government trying to bring Asia's newest country closer to its booming Southeast Asian neighbors.
Clinton met President Taur Matan Ruak and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao during a brief visit to the capital, Dili, after a day of talks in China. She was due to leave for Brunei later on Thursday.
U.S. officials said the visit -- the first by a U.S. secretary of state since East Timor won independence from Indonesia in 2002 -- was an effort to help stability and growth.
"Strong democracies, we know from long practice, make more stable neighbors and capable partners," Clinton told a news conference with Gusmao.
Clinton did not bring much new financial assistance. She was set to announce just $6.5 million in funding for scholarships to help East Timorese students study in the United States.
U.S. officials hope her visit will send a signal to East Timor's neighbors, some of which have resisted suggestions it join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) because it lags too far behind in political and economic development.
"Timor is still plagued with substantial violence ... they have a long way to go," a senior U.S. official told reporters.
U.S. officials say East Timor is still weak after more than 400 years of Portuguese colonization and a 24-year fight against Indonesian occupation, and see closer ties with ASEAN as a way to bring stability.
Gusmao won parliamentary elections in April but fell short of a majority, forcing the formation of a coalition government.
Still lacking much basic infrastructure, East Timor began receiving oil and gas revenues from fields it shares with Australia in 2005 and boasts a special oil fund with assets of more than $10 billion.
Clinton toured a USAID-funded coffee finishing plant. Coffee is East Timor's second-largest export, with U.S. giant Starbucks a major customer.

She also took stock of growing Chinese aid and investment, part of Beijing's push to accelerate influence in the region.
"We are not here against any other country, we are here on behalf of our partnerships and relationships with countries in the region," Clinton said, when asked if U.S. engagement in the region was aimed at China.
" ...certainly I am not going to shy away from standing up for our strategic interests and expressing clearly where we differ," she said.
China has built a number of major government buildings in East Timor. It has also signaled it is willing to partner with the United States in development projects to help East Timorese, 40 percent of whom live on less than a dollar a day.
U.S. officials said Washington hoped to step up cooperative development work with China, citing East Timor as one region in Asia where the two Pacific powers' interests could converge.
"The Chinese don't view the stakes as particularly high," the official said, although he noted that, even in cooperative ventures, China shields much of the details of development work.
Clinton said the United States would work with East Timor on concerns such as human trafficking and the victims of conflict.
The United States supported autocratic Indonesian ruler Suharto when Indonesia invaded East Timor, occupying half an island at the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago in 1975. East Timor finally won independence after a U.N.-sponsored referendum.
Gusmao was conciliatory, noting 70 percent of East Timor's trade was with Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy.

Simple Port Forward
Admittedly, I don't comprehend the need for third-party port forwarding utilities. Port forwarding and port triggering are standard features in most consumer and business routers. A possible use case scenario is the need to port forward on a router you don't have access to (in testing, I discovered that you do need to be able to log in with Simple Port Forwarding). In some cases, a router's management interface may make port forwarding tricky to setup and a third-party device many be easier for users to work with. Simple Port Forwarding is a free utility for Windows designed to help you set up port forwarding on a router. Besides a sharp, modern UI and tons of help in explaining how to port forward, as a utility, I found Simple Port Forwarding unnecessary to use for port forwarding in my router.
Availability and Download
Simple Port Forwarding comes in two varities: Ffree, and a $12.95 Pro edition. Both versions provide some extra functionality besides port forwarding, such as remote port forwarding from a browser, built-in port forwarding tester, access to guides and screenshots of port forwarding on the major routers out there, and more.
The free version is a quick download and install. As soon as you launch the program it updates a database of routers and applications that require port forwarding rules to work. This database is used to populate a drop-down menu from which you select your router and the application you are trying to port traffic to so you don't have to do any manually entry. However, adding an application from the drop-down list is only available in the paid version?in the free version I tested you still have to manually create a port forwarding rule. As far as detecting the router, Simple Port Forwarding automatically picked up and displayed my Netgear N600 WNDR3700 and its IP address.
Upon launch, the Simple Port Forwarding app opens a checklist users can follow to automate the port forwarding process. The features in the checklist, such as adding a rule from the drop-down menu are only available, again in the paid version. In the free version, there's another console for adding port forwarding manually, writing the rule to the router, and accessing other tools such as ping and a port forwarding test utility.
The UI is slick . You can even click a button "Show your router" which will display an actual image of your router make and model (as long as it's in Simple Port Forwarding's database). It's a sharp-looking interface that is more attractive and intuitive than many router interfaces, so I can see why a user may want to manage port forwarding through Simple Port Forwarding than many router management consoles.
The Test
However, looks aren't everything. Through the app, I could not add a port forwarding rule to my router using the free version?which the website states is supported.? I attempted to add a custom rule to port forward FTP traffic. After specifying the start and end ports as well as the destination IP, I clicked a button in the UI to add the newly created port forwarding entry to the router. I received a message stating that the rule was already created each time I tried to update to the router. The message persisted although an FTP port forward setting was not defined on the router's interface and a router reboot did not help.
The Verdict
If you can't port forward with Simple Port Forwarding, a port forwarding utility, you must consider the app useless. Yet, besides the cool interface, there is one good use of the app?it provides lots of tutelage on port forwarding. The app even guides you to links with step-by-step instructions with images on how to port forward on almost every major router interface on the market.? If you want to find out more about port forwarding or how to port forward your particular router, Simple Port Forwarding's website is a great destination. I didn?t test the paid version, but I would hope that if such care is taken to the website and design, support for this product would be decent.
However, the purpose of the software is to port forward your router, and the free version of app just did not work for me. Since the interface is well done, there are some tools to help you troubleshoot connections, and there's an abundance of help on port forwarding?all in the free version, Simple Port Forward gets 2.5 stars not so much for functionality but for its feature set.

I?ve noticed that most people on twitter are extremely positive and caring. If I ever feel discouraged, all I have to do is go to twitter and read some of the posts or interact with my tweeple and I can continue my day with an infusion of inspiration.

One day I wanted to do a little market research and I decided I would send a survey to my regular list community and the same survey to my twitter followers. I was amazed at the higher responsiveness from my twitter followers compared to my regular list community.
I believe it?s because on twitter people are actively engaged and everyone is flooded with email and many times email is simply ignored. I know I don?t read most of my email or I would never get anything done. I got a huge response from my twitter and they helped me decided which product to create next. United Steelworkers Local 1688 will hold an information and support rally at 3:30 p.m. today at ArcelorMittal's Gate 2 on South Front Street in Steelton, union officials said.
ArcelorMittal officials and union leaders have been negotiating a new contract for months. The contract expired over the weekend. Workers are continuing to work, not striking.According to the United Steelworkers' website, all 15 United Steelworkers unions are asked to hold rallies today. About 14,000 production, maintenance, office and technical workers are represented by the unions, according to its website.
ArcelorMittal officials have not divulged any negotiation information since Sept. 1, when it released the following statement: ?Negotiations continue between ArcelorMittal and the United Steelworkers. We remain optimistic about reaching a fair and equitable contract with the USW. However, due to the sensitivities of the negotiations process, the company will not address specific issues being discussed between the parties.?
